What Animals Can You See in Hwange?

As Zimbabwe’s largest and most celebrated reserve, Hwange National Park boasts an incredibly diverse ecosystem. It’s home to over 100 mammal species and 400 bird species, offering a rich and varied wildlife experience.

Here, you can encounter one of the largest elephant populations in the world, a sight that is truly humbling to behold. It’s not uncommon to see herds of over 100 elephants, especially around the park’s numerous waterholes.

Hwange is also home to all of Zimbabwe’s specially protected animals. It’s one of the best places to spot the regal sable and roan antelopes. Africa’s big predators, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, prowl the plains, while spotted hyenas and the elusive African wild dogs add to the thrill of the predator sightings.

The park’s bird life is equally impressive, with over 400 species recorded. From the colourful lilac-breasted roller and the regal fish eagle to the large kori bustard and the small, elusive pearl-spotted owlet, bird lovers will be in paradise.

When to Go

Hwange National Park is a year-round destination, but the best wildlife viewing is during the dry season, from July to October. During these months, animals congregate around the waterholes, providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

The wet season, from November to April, transforms the park into a lush, green landscape. This is a great time for bird watching as migratory birds are present. However, some roads may become impassable after heavy rains.

Your safari experience will be enhanced by Charles’ expert guidance. His intimate knowledge of animal behaviour and the park’s diverse habitats allows him to offer a truly personalized experience, tailored to meet your specific interests. Witnessing the park through Charles’ eyes offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities, from spotting elusive species to observing rare and fascinating animal interactions.
