The Zambezi River, majestic and powerful in its nature, is Africa’s forth longest river, flowing some 2,700 kilometres from its source in the Zambian highlands in central Africa to the Indian Ocean on it’s east coast. For a large part of it’s journey the River forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and is protected by a series of National Parks and protected wildlife areas.
Below the Victoria Falls the Zambezi, constrained within the narrow Batoka Gorge, is a raging torrent of rapids and rocks – offering thrill-seekers the adrenalin rush of white water rafting. Above the Falls, the wide river is calm and placid, and offers more sedate and relaxing opportunities for the visitor.
RIVER CRUISES (early morning, lunch and late afternoon)
Zambezi River cruises are a superb way to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty which so enchanted Livingstone, with a good to see a variety of game, including hippo, crocodile and elephant, as well as many different bird species, such as the African Fishing Eagle, White-fronted bee-eaters and numerous egret, heron and stork species.
Cruises follow various routes according to the time of year, departing from jetty points a short distance upstream from the Victoria Falls and travelling upstream, skirting the riverine fringe and some of the larger islands before returning gently back downstream.
The Sunrise Cruise is perfect for those wishing to experience the river in the quiet of morning, and is a favourite with bird-watchers and photographers. The cruise includes a cooked breakfast, fruit, muffins, tea/coffee and orange juice.
The Lunch Cruise includes a variety of salads, fresh bread rolls, chicken, beef and vegetables, deserts, tea, coffee, beer, wine and soft drinks.
The Sunset Cruise is the most popular time on the river, with great photo opportunities against often-spectacular African sunsets. Includes light snacks, beer, wine, local spirits and soft drinks.
Enjoy sundowners and snacks served upon boarding followed by a three course set menu. The cruise offers local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks which are included in the price.
CANOEING ON THE UPPER ZAMBEZI (half day, full day and multiday options)
Experience the beauty of the Zambezi River above the Victoria Falls, scenes which David Livingstone described as being “gazed upon by angels in their flight”. Canoe safaris offer great wildlife viewing and photographic opportunities and are available all year round. The wide upper river sections include occasional small rapid sections. Multiday trips include overnight camping in the Zambezi National Park.
Breakfast Drift (early morning only)
Early morning transfer upriver before being paddled by canoe downstream on this flat water stretch of river by experienced and knowledgeable guides. Explore overhung channels, sit back and take in the stunning river scenery, varied birdlife, hopefully hippo and possibly even elephant. Continental breakfast served on island stopover along the way. The trip finishes within sight of the spray of the Victoria Falls.
Sunset Drift (late afternoon only)
Known as the ‘wine route’ this version of the half day trip is timed for sunsets and sundowners. Clients can enjoy a selection of soft drinks, beer, wine and snacks as they are guided in their canoes.
Upper Zambezi Canoe Trip (full morning trip)
On these trips clients paddle their own canoes, following their qualified Canoe Guide as he leads the way. The trip is spent canoeing 15kms downstream, running small grade one and two rapids, exploring the edges of islands, overhung channels, and enjoying bird and wildlife viewing. Lunch and cold minerals and beers are served at the disembarkment point. Clients are back in Victoria Falls by about 14h30, allowing them enough time to do another activity in the afternoon.
The Zambezi River above the Victoria Falls offers fine fishing opportunities, including the chance to fish for the tigerfish, regarded as one of the finest freshwater game fish in the world. Powerful predators, armed with sharp teeth, tigerfish put up a strong fight and are a thrill to catch. Spinning is the most popular method to catch ‘tigers’, but fly fishing is also increasingly popular. Bream, or tilapia, also live in large numbers in the rivers and there are many other species to fish for. A catch-and-release policy is usually followed for all fish caught.
A range of fishing options are available and can be arranged by request. Contact us for more information.
The river offers a range of wetland habitats and corresponding wealth of birdlife. Herons, egrets and storks of various species are common, and the river also offers the chance to see rare specialities such as the African finfoot, a secretive bird of the river margins, as well as many other species.
Morning Sunrise Cruises are popular with birders, and specialist trips in smaller boats and with your own knowledgeable guide can be arranged by request. Contact us for more information. See also our Birding Safaris.

Discover Victoria Falls is by far the best way to experience all that this incredible part of the world has to offer. I have been to the falls several times but came away from this most recent trip with the most memorable and special experiences I could wish for.

Charles Brightman was our guide in the Zambezi National Park and his enthusiasm for nature and all things was so contagious that our 3 hour Walking Safari went for 5 and a half hours and finished only because we had a midday lunch appointment. Treat yourself to a wonderful experience.
Our bush walk with Charles Brightman was so informative and his love for the bush, animals, birds, environmental issues and the country was inspiring. And the sunset dinner was wonderful! Many, many thanks - a great service!
We engaged Charles as our private guide whilst on holiday in Zimbabwe last October. Cannot recommend him enough - he made our trip to Hwange!!
